What is shockwave therapy and how does it help?

Learn how shockwave therapy reduces pain and promotes tissue healing, who it helps, and how many sessions are typically needed.

What is shockwave therapy and how does it help?

Shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a modern, non-invasive treatment method that uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate tissue repair and relieve chronic pain syndromes. The method is widely validated in sports medicine and orthopedics and is one of the most popular procedures at our clinic in Riga.

How does shockwave therapy work?

During the procedure, a special applicator delivers acoustic pulses directly to the problem area — a tendon, muscle, or connective tissue with chronic inflammation or scar tissue. These pulses:

  • improve blood circulation in the treated area;
  • stimulate the formation of new blood vessels (neovascularization);
  • activate the body's own healing processes;
  • reduce the sensitivity of pain receptors, lowering the sensation of pain.

Who benefits most from shockwave therapy?

This method is especially effective for:

  • heel spur (plantar fasciitis);
  • epicondylitis ("tennis elbow" or "golfer's elbow");
  • Achilles tendon inflammation;
  • calcific deposits in the shoulder rotator cuff;
  • chronic muscle tension and trigger points.

How many sessions are needed?

Most patients feel improvement after just 1–2 sessions, but a stable, long-term result usually requires 3–6 sessions spaced about a week apart. Each session takes 15–20 minutes, and afterwards it's best to avoid intense physical activity in the treated area for 24–48 hours.

If you have persistent pain that doesn't go away with rest, shockwave therapy could be an effective solution. Book a consultation at FizioBalance clinic in Riga, and our specialists will assess whether this method suits your case.
